There is no single "US time"

The mainland United States spans four time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific, each an hour apart. Against India's fixed UTC+5:30, that produces four different answers, and each of them changes by an hour when the US enters and leaves daylight saving. An invite that says "3 PM US time" is genuinely ambiguous across a three-hour range.

Beyond the mainland there is more: Alaska, Hawaii, and several territories, none of which follow the mainland pattern exactly. If your counterpart is outside the contiguous states, add their city to the team planner rather than assuming one of the four zones below applies.

  • Eastern: New York, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Washington DC.
  • Central: Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis, New Orleans.
  • Mountain: Denver, Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, and Phoenix on its own rules.
  • Pacific: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, San Diego, Portland.

Arizona is the exception that catches people out

Most of Arizona does not observe daylight saving. It stays on Mountain Standard Time all year, which means that for roughly eight months it matches Pacific time rather than the rest of the Mountain zone, then falls back into line with Denver for the winter. Phoenix is listed separately in the table above for exactly this reason.

The Navajo Nation, which extends into Arizona, does observe daylight saving, and the Hopi Reservation within it does not. This is genuinely intricate and is one of the clearer arguments for working from city-level IANA zones rather than from a mental map of state boundaries.

How much overlap you get, zone by zone

The further west your counterpart is, the harder the scheduling. Against Eastern time there is a narrow but real overlap in the Indian evening. Against Central it is narrower still. Against Mountain and Pacific there is effectively none within two standard working days, and someone has to move.

This is worth checking before hiring or committing to a delivery model rather than afterwards. A team split between India and the US East Coast can hold a daily call; the same team split between India and California usually cannot, and will work better with an asynchronous handover.

  • Eastern: roughly 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM India meets the New York morning.
  • Central: roughly 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM India meets the Chicago morning.
  • Mountain and Pacific: no overlap inside two conventional working days.

When the US gaps change

The United States moves its clocks forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November. Because India never changes, every one of these gaps shifts by exactly one hour on those two dates, and only on those two dates.

Europe changes on different Sundays in March and October, so for a few weeks each year the relationship between India, the UK and the US is not the one your team is used to. If you run a call across all three, check those weeks specifically.

Frequently asked questions

Four: Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific, each one hour apart. Alaska and Hawaii add two more, and the territories add others, so six zones cover the states and more cover everything the US administers.
