Randomness is useful for breaking out of habitual color choices, but a fully random set is rarely usable as-is. Locking keeps the swatches you like in place while everything else regenerates, so you can converge on a palette across several passes instead of hoping one roll produces all of it.
Locked colors are also excluded from being generated again, so a regeneration will not hand you a near-duplicate of a swatch you already kept.
The default preset samples the full sRGB cube, which produces the widest variety and the most unusable colors. The three constrained presets sample bounded ranges of saturation and lightness instead: pastel stays light and gently saturated, vivid stays bright and strongly saturated, and muted keeps saturation low across a mid-tone range.
A constrained preset makes a set that hangs together more readily, because the generated colors already share a lightness and saturation character even though their hues are unrelated.
Colors are drawn from the browser's cryptographic random source rather than a seeded generator, so results are not reproducible and the same settings will not return the same palette twice. Share links carry the specific colors on screen, not a seed.
Random hues carry no relationship to one another. If you need a structured set, start from one color you like and use a harmony generator or a shade scale instead.
Only through its share link, which stores the actual colors. Generation uses a cryptographic random source rather than a seed, so the same settings will not reproduce a previous set.
