Image Color Palette Extractor

How the palette is chosen

The image is scaled down to a small sample, then its pixels are grouped by repeatedly splitting the most varied group along its widest colour channel until the number of swatches you asked for remains. Each group contributes its average colour and the share of sampled pixels it covers.

The share figures describe how much of the image each colour family occupies, which is what makes one swatch the dominant colour rather than simply the most eye-catching one. They are calculated from the downscaled sample and sum to 100 percent.

Your image stays on your device

Decoding, downscaling and extraction all run in your browser. The image is never sent to a server, there is no upload endpoint, and nothing about it is stored or logged. Closing the page discards it.

Because the image never leaves the browser, it cannot be part of a share link either. Share links from this tool carry only the palette settings.

What a palette does and does not tell you

A palette is a statistical summary of a downscaled sample, not an exact inventory of every colour present. A small but important detail — a logo, a single flower — may be averaged into a neighbouring group, and asking for more swatches is the usual way to surface it.

Extracted colours are also not automatically usable as an interface palette. They carry no role assignment and no contrast guarantee, so run any pairing you intend to use for text through an accessibility check first.

Accepted formats are PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF, up to 10 MB. SVG is not accepted.

Frequently asked questions

No. Decoding and extraction run entirely in your browser. There is no upload endpoint, nothing is stored or logged, and closing the page discards the image.
